Traction alopecia

WHAT IS TRACTION ALOPECIA?

Traction alopecia (TA) is hair loss caused by repeated pulling or tension on the hair. It can affect men and women of all backgrounds, but is especially common in people who wear tight hairstyles such as ponytails, braids, weaves, dreadlocks, and of course hair extensions. It is also seen in those who wear hijabs (Muslim women), turbans (Sikh males), skullcaps (Jewish males), or other head coverings.

In the early stages, traction alopecia is reversible if the tension is reduced. However, if tight hairstyles are continued for many years, the condition can progress to permanent, scarring hair loss.

Warning signs include hair thinning along the hairline, scalp tenderness, pain, or small bumps where the hair is pulled.
