WHAT IS MALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS (AGA)?
Male pattern hair loss or male pattern balding, also called male androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. By the age of 50, about 50% of males will have developed significant amounts of this genetic type of hair loss. The condition is inherited from both the mother’s and father’s side of the family, contrary to the popular belief that it only comes from the mother’s side.
Men with male pattern balding typically notice hair loss at the temples and crown. Over time, this may expand to involve the entire frontal scalp, mid-scalp, and top of the head. The back of the scalp (occipital area) is usually spared, as this region is more resistant to balding.
Hair loss does not always progress steadily, it often comes in waves, with periods of shedding followed by times when the hair loss slows down or stabilizes.
