Age-related thinning (senescent alopecia)

WHAT IS AGE-RELATED THINNING

Age-related thinning, sometimes referred to as senescent alopecia, is a form of gradual hair thinning that typically begins around the age of 50 and progresses slowly over time. It affects both men and women, regardless of whether they have experienced genetic hair loss earlier in life.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS

Individuals often notice their hair becoming noticeably thinner around the age of 60 (sometimes sooner or later). The thinning tends to affect the entire scalp, with the top of the head being most affected.

Although some individuals may have developed androgenetic alopecia earlier in life, age-related thinning is a separate, different process, though the two may coexist or overlap in certain individuals.

HOW FAST DOES HAIR LOSS PROGRESS

The hair loss in age-related thinning is typically slow and progressive, developing over the course of several years.

ARE BLOOD TESTS OR BIOPSIES NEEDED

There is no specific blood test to diagnose age-related thinning. However, as part of a thorough evaluation, basic blood work may be performed, including iron studies, thyroid function, and vitamin D levels, to rule out other contributing factors.

A scalp biopsy is rarely necessary. When performed, the findings may resemble those of genetic hair loss, making it difficult to distinguish between the two under the microscope.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE

The most recommended treatment for age-related thinning until today is still topical minoxidil (available as a lotion or foam). However, minoxidil is only effective in around 40% of the population. Therefore, DNA testing is offered at Donia Maria Clinic, offering valuable insights into each individual’s unique genetic profile and allowing for the creation of a truly bespoke, highly effective treatment plan.
