WHAT IS ALOPECIA AREATA
Areata Alopecia Areata is a relatively common type of hair loss that affects about 2% of the population worldwide. It is a non-scarring condition, which means the hair follicles are not permanently damaged and hair can grow back.
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out. Why this happens to some people is still unknown.
It can begin at any age and affects both men and women. In about 50% of cases, the first signs appear before the age of 20, often starting in childhood or adolescence.
Most people will develop one or more round or oval bald patches, most commonly on the scalp. However, it can also affect the eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, or other parts of the body. In some cases, hair regrows completely after a single episode. In others, the condition may return or progress over time.
As mentioned, the exact cause is still unknown, but research suggests that a mix of genetics, environmental factors, and immune system imbalances may trigger the condition. People with a personal or family history of autoimmune diseases, such as thyroid problems, vitiligo, type 1 diabetes, or eczema, are more likely to develop Alopecia.
TYPES OF ALOPECIA AREATA
Alopecia Areata varies is presentation, and its classification depends on the extent and distribution of hair loss:
- Patchy Alopecia Areata – The most common type, with one or more isolated bald patches on the scalp or other body areas.
- Alopecia Totalis – Complete loss of scalp hair.
- Alopecia Universalis – Total loss of hair from the scalp, face, and body.
- Ophiasis – A pattern of hair loss that affects the sides and lower back of the scalp.
- Diffuse Alopecia Areata – A sudden and widespread thinning of hair rather than distinct bald patches, often mistaken for telogen effluvium.
WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ALOPECIA AREATA
Alopecia Areata is a very active field of research in dermatology, and effective treatment options exist. Although there is currently no definitive cure, there are effective treatments available to help suppress immune activity and promote hair regrowth. These may include:
- Topical therapies (such as corticosteroids, immunomodulators, or minoxidil)
- Intralesional corticosteroid injections
- Oral medications (including immunosuppressants or JAK inhibitors in select cases)
