WHAT IS BREAST IMPLANT ILLNESS
Breast Implant Illness (BII) refers to a group of symptoms some women experience after breast augmentation or reconstruction. These may include fatigue, joint pain, rashes, anxiety, hormonal changes, and in many cases, hair loss.
While research is ongoing, the Magno-Padron et al. study from 2021 reported that up to 74% of women experienced hair loss alongside other BII symptoms. This may be linked to chronic inflammation, autoimmune activation, nutritional imbalance or caused by systemic stress.
Although there is no definitive medical consensus yet, a growing number of women report improvement, sometimes partial and sometimes complete, following implant removal (explanation). In the Magno-Padron et al study from 2021, 59% of women had improvement in hair loss after explanting.
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR BREAST IMPLANT ILLNESS
At the clinic, we closely monitor emerging research in this area, particularly when unexplained hair loss occurs in women with a history of breast implants.
If you have had breast augmentation and are experiencing unexplained hair shedding or other systemic symptoms, we provide thorough and comprehensive evaluations to identify contributing factors and offer the most suitable treatment.
Every consultation begins with a thorough evaluation, not only of your hair and scalp but of your lifestyle, medical history, current routines, and emotional wellbeing. We take the time to listen and uncover any of the underlying triggers, whether it being genetics, hormonal, environmental or medical.
From there, we design a tailored treatment strategy that may include advanced therapies, topical and systemic interventions, and supportive care.
DNA testing may also be included, offering valuable insights into each individual’s unique genetic profile and allowing for the creation of truly bespoke, highly effective treatment strategies.
